    Squamish Polar Bear Swim 2026

Squamish welcomes the New Year with one of its most spirited winter traditions. The Squamish Polar Bear Swim 2026takes place on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Sp’akw’us Feather Park, inviting both swimmers and spectators to gather for a bold, refreshing start to the year.

Now celebrating its 15th annual edition, this community-driven event is open to everyone — whether you’re plunging into the chilly waters of Howe Sound or cheering from the beach. The swim goes ahead rain or shine, even in snow or arctic outflow conditions.

    Event Overview

    • Date: Thursday, January 1, 2026

    • Time: 12:00 PM (sharp)

    • Location: Sp’akw’us Feather Park (public beach), Squamish, BC

    • Admission: Free

    • Weather: Rain, snow, or cold — the plunge goes on

    What to Expect

The Squamish Polar Bear Swim is known for its relaxed, welcoming vibe and strong sense of local community.

    Event highlights include:

    • A New Year’s Day plunge into the waters of Howe Sound

    • A mix of seasoned dippers and first-time swimmers

    • Spectators welcome to watch and support from the beach

    • A simple, no-frills atmosphere focused on fun and tradition

Organizers Mike Wight and Katie Coombs encourage participants to come prepared:

    • Bring a towel

    • Consider water shoes, as frozen sand and gravel can be tough on bare feet

    Safety Tips for Participants

Cold-water swimming comes with risks, and safety is strongly encouraged. General guidelines for New Year’s Day plunges include:

    • Participation is not recommended for individuals with heart conditions

    • Children must be accompanied by an adult

    • Avoid alcohol before the plunge, as it increases the risk of hypothermia

    • Limit time in the water to under 15 minutes

    • Remove clothing only when it’s time to swim, following the countdown

The average January water temperature in Howe Sound is approximately 6.5°C, so preparation is key.

    Event History

Polar bear swims have deep roots in British Columbia. The tradition is believed to have started in Vancouver in 1920, when restaurateur and swim enthusiast Peter Pantages organized a small New Year’s Day swim at English Bay.

What began with just a handful of participants has grown into a beloved Canadian tradition — and in Squamish, it has proudly continued for 15 years and counting.

Why Attend the Squamish Polar Bear Swim

This New Year’s Day event is perfect for:

    • Starting the year with a bold personal challenge

    • Enjoying a scenic winter beach setting in Squamish

    • Taking part in a long-standing community tradition

    • Supporting and celebrating local outdoor culture

Whether you dive in or watch from shore, the Squamish Polar Bear Swim offers a refreshing and memorable way to welcome 2026.
