🌎 Underground Tour: Elements of Alebrijes
Embark on a special Día de los Muertos–themed underground tour, where you’ll join a guided journey to gather the four essential elements — earth, fire, air, and water — while exploring the fascinating world of alebrijes, the fantastical creatures of Mexican folk art.
This interactive experience connects mining heritage with cultural symbolism and includes a train ride through the underground tunnels, offering a one-of-a-kind adventure for visitors of all ages.
🏮 Machine Shop Fiesta: Art, Memory & Marigolds
Above ground, the Machine Shop transforms into a vibrant celebration of colour and life. Stroll through the Monarch Forest, explore a Mexican Village, and wander through the glowing Calavera Tunnel. Learn about the meaning behind ofrendas (altars) and immerse yourself in interactive stations designed for creativity and reflection:

✍️ Ofrenda Message Cards: Write a message, wish, or memory for a loved one and add it to the community altar — a beautiful way to honour and remember family members.

🎨 Sugar Skull Colouring: Bring traditional sugar skulls to life using markers or UV pens — they’ll even glow in the museum’s glow-in-the-dark tunnel!

💀 What is Día de los Muertos?
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican holiday held on November 1–2 to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. It’s a colourful, joyful event that combines Indigenous Aztec customs and Catholic traditions, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Families honour ancestors with altars (ofrendas) decorated with marigolds, candles, photos, food, and favourite items of the departed — symbolizing remembrance, continuity, and love.

🗣 What languages are used during the tour?
All activities and underground tours are conducted in English, though select cultural terms and phrases will appear in Spanish with English translations for an authentic experience.
🍂 Is the event included with regular admission?
No. The Day of the Dead Underground Tours are special-ticket events and do not include the BOOM! Show or access to the historic Mill. Guests can add the BOOM! Show for $10 per person or enjoy standard underground tours at regular pricing.
