About Día de los Muertos
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican and Latin American holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2 to remember and honour loved ones who have passed away.
Rather than mourning, it’s a joyful festival that celebrates life through music, dance, food, and art.
Common symbols include:
-
Marigolds (Cempasúchil): Flowers that guide spirits with their scent and colour.
-
Ofrendas (Altars): Decorated with photos, candles, and offerings for ancestors.
-
Calaveras (Skulls): Playful symbols representing the beauty of life and death.
-
Butterflies & Candles: Signifying remembrance and the return of loved ones’ souls.
Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Día de los Muertos continues to unite communities through its powerful message of love, remembrance, and renewal.
