Description
Rio Brazilian Steakhouse on Denman Street is where the Rio story started. The family-owned restaurant opened here in 2012 to bring southern Brazil’s churrascaria tradition to Vancouver, and it’s been a West End fixture ever since. Servers walk the dining room with skewers of grilled meat and carve them right at your table, as often as you like, alongside a fresh salad bar and unlimited hot sides.
The location is hard to beat. It’s a short walk from English Bay Beach and the edge of Stanley Park, so you can spend the afternoon on the seawall and finish the day with a Brazilian barbecue feast.
What Is Rodizio Dining?
If you’ve never been to a Brazilian steakhouse, here’s how it works. Rodizio is a continuous-service style of dining that started with the gauchos, the cowboys of southern Brazil, who cooked large cuts of meat over open fire. At Rio, that tradition comes to the table: you pay one price, and carvers keep bringing different cuts until you tell them you’re done.
Pace yourself. The first few rounds come fast, and the best cuts are worth saving room for.
The Meats
The rotation at Rio Vancouver includes beef, pork, lamb, chicken and ribs, each seasoned and slow-roasted on skewers. Guest favourites include:
- Picanha, the top sirloin cap and the signature cut of Brazilian barbecue, with a rich layer of fat that crisps on the grill
- Tri-tip, lean, tender and full of flavour
- New York steak, a classic for steak lovers
- Lamb, a nice change of pace between the beef cuts
- Chicken and pork, for lighter bites
- Pork ribs, slow-cooked until tender
And don’t skip the grilled pineapple with cinnamon. It’s carved tableside like the meats, and the sweet, caramelized fruit is a perfect break between rounds. Many regulars call it the best thing on the skewer.
Salad Bar and Hot Sides
The meal isn’t only meat. Rio’s modern salad bar and hot buffet are included and unlimited, so you can build a plate of fresh vegetables, salads and warm sides to go with the barbecue.
Gluten-Free, Keto and Low-Carb Friendly
Rio calls itself a gluten-free paradise, and it’s easy to see why. Plain grilled meats, fresh salads and simple sides make it one of the easiest restaurants in Vancouver to eat at if you avoid gluten. It’s also a natural fit for keto, Atkins and other low-carb diets, since the main event is protein. If you have a serious allergy, let your server know so they can guide you through the buffet.
