About the Polar Bare Skinny Dip
Unlike traditional polar bear swims, this event celebrates body positivity, freedom, and community spirit. Participants plunge into the cold waters of Boundary Bay, directly in front of the iconic 12-tonne Crescent Rock boulder, creating a memorable and photo-worthy New Year’s moment.
While participation is nude-friendly, spectators are welcome to watch and support from the beach.
Getting There
Crescent Rock Beach can be accessed by:
-
Walking 100 metres south of Crescent Beach, past the Christopherson Steps metal staircase
-
Taking the stairs at the west end of 24 Avenue, descending to the beach, and turning left
⚠️ Important: Do not walk on nearby railway tracks. Trespassing is dangerous and may result in fines.
Footwear is strongly recommended, such as secure sandals or aquatic shoes, due to small rocks before the sandy flats.
Bonfire & Warm-Up
After the plunge, participants can warm up by a beach bonfire near Crescent Rock — a welcome and essential part of the experience on a cold January afternoon.
The Triple Crown Polar Challenge
For experienced cold-water swimmers, the Mad Hatter’s Swim Club offers the legendary Triple Crown Polar Bear Swim, featuring:
-
12:00 PM – White Rock Beach
-
1:00 PM – Crescent Rock Beach (Polar Bare Skinny Dip)
-
2:30 PM – English Bay, Vancouver
Completing all three plunges in one day is considered the ultimate New Year’s cold-water challenge.
