The guide

How to choose where to stay

Most visitors base themselves on the downtown peninsula. It is compact and walkable, with the Seawall, Stanley Park, Gastown and Yaletown all within reach on foot, and the Canada Line runs straight to the airport.

Downtown and Coal Harbour

Downtown has the widest choice of hotels, from large convention properties to boutique stays near Robson Street. Coal Harbour, on the waterfront, is where you will find many of the city’s luxury hotels, with harbour and mountain views and easy access to the Convention Centre and cruise terminal.

Yaletown, Gastown and the West End

Yaletown suits travellers who want restaurants and patios on the doorstep, while Gastown offers heritage character and some of the city’s best cocktail bars. The West End is quieter and close to English Bay and Stanley Park, with many apartment-style suites that work well for families.

Beyond downtown

Granville Island and Kitsilano offer a more relaxed West Side stay. Richmond, beside the airport, is ideal for early flights and has an outstanding food scene, and Burnaby hotels near SkyTrain offer good value with a quick ride into the city.

FAQ

Good to know

What is the best area to stay in Vancouver?

For first-time visitors, downtown Vancouver is the most convenient base, with Coal Harbour, Yaletown, Gastown and the West End all within walking distance. Choose Coal Harbour for harbour views, Yaletown for dining, Gastown for character and the West End for beaches and Stanley Park.

Where should I stay in Vancouver without a car?

Stay downtown or near a Canada Line station, such as in Yaletown or around Waterfront Station. The Canada Line connects the airport to downtown in about 25 minutes, and most sights are walkable or a short transit ride away.

Is it better to stay downtown or near the airport?

Downtown is best for sightseeing, dining and nightlife. Airport hotels in Richmond are convenient for early flights and late arrivals, and the Canada Line still puts downtown within about 25 minutes.

Where can I stay near Stanley Park?

The West End and Coal Harbour are the closest areas to Stanley Park, with hotels and suites within a few minutes’ walk of the park and the Seawall.

When is hotel demand highest in Vancouver?

Summer, major conventions, cruise season and big games or concerts at BC Place and Rogers Arena are the busiest times. Booking early is recommended for these dates.

Are there budget places to stay in Vancouver?

Yes. Hostels, heritage budget hotels and suburban motels offer lower rates, and staying near a SkyTrain station in Burnaby or Richmond can also reduce costs while keeping downtown close.
