Now in its 6th year, the Witchilano Paddle invites experienced stand-up paddleboarders to trade broomsticks for paddles and glide through Vancouver's waters in full witch or warlock costume. The group meets at Kitsilano Beach for photos before setting off around 11:30 AM toward Granville Island and back, casting a little spooky season spirit along the way.
What to Wear
Come dressed as a witch or warlock, ideally in mostly black for the spookiest look. Local thrift stores are a good source for affordable, sustainable costume pieces.
Route
The group meets on the beach in front of the main washroom building at Kitsilano Beach, paddles toward Granville Island and back, though paddling one-way only is also an option.
Parking
A pay parking lot is available at the beach off Arbutus Street near the tennis courts. Arriving early, carpooling, or getting dropped off is recommended.
Donations for SHARE Family and Community Services
Attendees are asked to bring packaged, non-perishable food in good condition as a small "price of admission." Most needed items include nutritious canned goods, whole grain rice or legumes, and baby formula. Cash donations are also welcome and appreciated.
Important Safety Note
This paddle is for experienced paddlers only. A PFD and leash are required, and all paddle levels are welcome as long as participants are comfortable on a board — this should not be anyone's first time paddling. There is no official instruction, leadership, lifeguard, or supervision provided; participants paddle at their own risk.
