02 The story
North Van’s main street
If Lower Lonsdale is the waterfront showpiece, Central Lonsdale is where much of daily life in the City of North Vancouver happens. Lonsdale Avenue climbs steadily from the harbour, and the blocks around 13th to 17th Street form a long commercial strip of grocers, pharmacies, cafés, restaurants and small shops, with apartment buildings on the side streets.
The civic centre is here. City Hall and the North Vancouver City Library face each other near 14th Street, linked by a public plaza that is used for gatherings and events. A few blocks east, Lions Gate Hospital is the main hospital for the North Shore, which makes the area popular with health workers.
Parks and the view down the hill
The neighbourhood does not have the waterfront, but it has a view of it. Look south down Lonsdale on a clear day and you will see the harbour and downtown Vancouver framed at the bottom of the street. For green space, Mahon Park to the west has sports fields and wooded paths, and smaller parks are scattered through the side streets.
Central Lonsdale is a good fit for people who want convenience. Most errands can be done on foot, buses run frequently up and down Lonsdale, and the SeaBus is a short ride away. It suits renters, young professionals, older residents who want to downsize without leaving the North Shore, and anyone who likes a neighbourhood with a mix of ages and backgrounds.
For visitors, it is less of a sightseeing destination and more of a place to eat. The strip has a wide range of casual restaurants, including many Persian and other international options, and it tends to be quieter and easier for parking than the waterfront.
