The Fish Man: Richmond's Award-Winning Sichuan Seafood Restaurant
The Fish Man is a lively Richmond restaurant where Chef Bo Li combines bold Sichuan flavours with fresh, sustainable BC seafood. It was named Restaurant of the Year and Best Sichuan Restaurant by the Chinese Restaurant Awards in 2022, ranked No. 9 on the awards' 2025 Elite 30 Canada list, and was ranked No. 90 on Canada's 100 Best Restaurants for 2026.
Here is what to order at The Fish Man and how to plan your visit.
About The Fish Man
Chef Bo Li began cooking at 18 and first built a cult following with Li's China Grill, a Sichuan roast fish spot in Vancouver's Collingwood neighbourhood, before opening The Fish Man on Richmond's Alexandra Road, the restaurant strip locals call Eat Street. He was named Rising Star Chef of the Year by the Chinese Restaurant Awards in 2022.
The Fish Man uses Ocean Wise seafood where possible and sources from respected producers such as Fanny Bay Oysters. Awards judges have praised how the kitchen marries BC ling cod and other local seafood with Sichuan preparations, from bright, spicy sour cabbage to deep chili oil heat.
The Menu
How It Works
The menu is built around seafood for sharing. Most groups choose a fish hot pot or grilled fish as the centrepiece and add a few stir-fries and a rice dish.
What to Order
- Sour cabbage fish hot pot: ling cod in a velvety pork-bone broth with pickled cabbage and Sichuan peppercorns, the signature dish.
- Ma la grilled fish pot: whole fish grilled with Sichuan spices and served sizzling.
- Lobster rice: steamed lobster served over rice.
- Stir-fried spicy clams: a Chinese Restaurant Awards Critics' Choice winner.
- Golden BC spot prawns with salted egg yolk: a rich, seasonal favourite.
Dietary Needs
The menu centres on seafood, with heat levels that can be adjusted on many dishes. Let staff know about shellfish allergies.
