02 The story
A country town on Fraser Highway
Aldergrove grew up as a farming community in the eastern Township of Langley, and it still feels like a small town compared with the suburbs to the west. Its centre is a compact stretch of Fraser Highway around 272 Street, with local shops, restaurants, services and a mix of older buildings and newer mixed-use developments. Beyond that, residential streets quickly give way to farms, acreages and forest.
The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre is a major local amenity, with an indoor pool, a fitness centre and an ice rink. Nearby parks and the community’s events give the town a close-knit feel.
Parks, zoo and the border
Just south of town, Aldergrove Regional Park straddles the boundary with Abbotsford and offers forest trails, open meadows and trails shared with horseback riders. The Greater Vancouver Zoo, on 264 Street just north of Aldergrove, is a popular family outing.
Aldergrove is also close to the Aldergrove-Lynden border crossing on 264 Street, which connects to Lynden in Washington State. That makes it a convenient spot for cross-border trips, and some residents use it as their main route south. Check border wait times and hours before you go.
The neighbourhood suits people who want more space and a quieter pace, and who do not mind a longer drive into Vancouver. It is car-oriented, but the 503 express along Fraser Highway connects to SkyTrain at Surrey Central. For visitors, Aldergrove pairs well with a zoo visit or a hike in the regional park, and with farm stands and wineries on the surrounding rural roads.
