02 The story
From farm fields to new suburb
Willoughby was a rural district of farms and acreages for most of its history. Over the past couple of decades, the Township of Langley has planned it as a major growth area, and much of it has been rebuilt with townhouses, apartment buildings and single-family homes on new streets. The result is a neighbourhood of new schools, parks and plenty of families with small children.
Willoughby is made up of several smaller communities, including Yorkson, Latimer and Carvolth, each with its own neighbourhood plan. Construction is still common, and some streets look very different from one year to the next.
Town centre and events
Willoughby Town Centre, at 80 Avenue and 208 Street, is a walkable mixed-use hub with groceries, a pharmacy, banks, restaurants, cafés and services set along pedestrian-friendly streets. Further west, the Langley Events Centre on 200 Street combines a large arena, gyms and a community recreation centre. It is the home rink of the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League and hosts major school sports tournaments, concerts and community events.
To the south, Willowbrook Shopping Centre and the big-box stores along 200 Street and the Langley Bypass are a short drive away, and the future Willowbrook SkyTrain station will improve transit connections once the extension opens.
Willoughby suits young families, first-time buyers looking for newer townhouses, and people who want modern amenities over heritage charm. It is largely car-oriented today, and traffic on 200 Street can be heavy at peak times. Visitors mostly come for games and events at the Langley Events Centre, so check event schedules and plan for parking on busy nights.
