02 The story
A planned suburb by the river
Walnut Grove was mostly farmland and forest until the late twentieth century, when it was developed as a suburban community of single-family homes and townhouses on curving streets and cul-de-sacs. Today it is one of the most established family neighbourhoods in the Township of Langley, with mature trees, plenty of schools and a strong local sports culture.
Daily life centres on Walnut Grove Community Park and the Walnut Grove Community Centre, which together offer sports fields, an indoor pool, fitness and recreation programs, and a library branch nearby. Shopping plazas along 88 Avenue and near 200 Street cover groceries, restaurants and services, with larger stores along the 200 Street corridor.
Fraser River parks
The neighbourhood’s northern edge is close to the Fraser River. Derby Reach Regional Park, a short drive away, has riverside trails, open meadows and a historic farmhouse, plus a campground beside the river. The Fort-to-Fort Trail links the park with Fort Langley village, making for a pleasant walk or bike ride. To the north, the Golden Ears Bridge crosses the Fraser to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
Walnut Grove suits families who want a settled neighbourhood with established parks and schools, and commuters who need fast access to Highway 1 and the Port Mann Bridge. It is car-oriented, but the express bus from Carvolth Exchange gives a reasonable transit option to SkyTrain.
For visitors, Walnut Grove is less a destination than a convenient base for exploring Fort Langley, the river parks and the Township’s farm country, all within a short drive.
