02 The story
Vancouver’s south gateway on the Fraser River
Marpole sits at the southern edge of Vancouver, where the city meets the north arm of the Fraser River. It is both one of the city’s newest-looking neighbourhoods, with apartments rising near the Canada Line, and one of its oldest places: the area includes c̓əsnaʔəm, an ancient Musqueam village site that is a National Historic Site of Canada.
A neighbourhood with deep roots
Musqueam people have lived along this part of the Fraser River for thousands of years. Later, a settlement grew around the river crossing and the interurban railway, and the neighbourhood was named after Richard Marpole, a Canadian Pacific Railway official.
Granville Street and Marine Gateway
Granville Street around 70th Avenue is Marpole’s traditional shopping street, with family restaurants, bakeries and services. Near Marine Drive Station, Marine Gateway adds a cinema, supermarket, shops and restaurants.
On the river
Riverside parks and trails offer views of the Fraser River, tugboats and the airport across the water. The Oak Street and Arthur Laing bridges connect Marpole with Richmond and Vancouver International Airport.
Who it suits
Marpole is popular with renters, families and airport workers for its relatively affordable apartments, quick airport access and Canada Line connections to downtown.
