02 The story
Home of the Punjabi Market
Sunset is a south Vancouver neighbourhood between Main Street and Fraser Street, running down towards the Fraser River. It is not to be confused with Sunset Beach in the West End: this Sunset is a residential, family-oriented area best known as the centre of Vancouver’s South Asian community.
The Punjabi Market
The stretch of Main Street around 49th Avenue is home to the Punjabi Market, which grew in the 1970s and is one of the oldest South Asian shopping districts in North America. Sari and jewellery shops, sweet shops, grocers and restaurants serving Punjabi and other South Asian cuisines make it a favourite destination, especially around festivals.
Vaisakhi
Every April, the Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade begins at the Ross Street Sikh Temple in the neighbourhood, drawing huge crowds for music, food and celebration of the Sikh New Year.
Parks and community
Memorial South Park and Moberly Park offer sports fields and playgrounds, and the Sunset Community Centre is a hub for classes and recreation. Fraser Street adds more local shops and restaurants.
Getting around
Frequent buses run along Main Street, Fraser Street and 49th Avenue, connecting to the Canada Line at Langara–49th Avenue Station.
