Ambleside Beach: West Vancouver's Waterfront Favourite
Category: Beaches & Parks | Area: West Vancouver | Cost: Free | Best for: Families, dog owners, seawall walks, ship-watching, sunsets
Just across the Lions Gate Bridge from downtown, Ambleside Beach feels like a different pace of life. The sandy shoreline looks straight across the water at Stanley Park and the bridge, giant container ships glide past on their way in and out of the harbour, and the Centennial Seawalk invites a long, easy stroll toward Dundarave. Behind the beach, a large park offers playgrounds, sports fields, and one of the best-loved off-leash dog areas on the North Shore. It's a classic weekend spot for West Vancouver families and a great day trip from the city.
Where Is Ambleside Beach?
Ambleside Beach sits along the waterfront in West Vancouver, at the foot of 13th Street just west of the mouth of the Capilano River. It's part of Ambleside Park, managed by the District of West Vancouver. The shops and cafés of Ambleside Village line Marine Drive just a block up from the water, and the Centennial Seawalk connects the beach west to Dundarave Beach and Pier.
A Bit of History
Ambleside sits on the traditional territory of the Squamish Nation, whose community at Xwemelch'stn, near the mouth of the Capilano River, borders the park. The area takes its English name from the village of Ambleside in England's Lake District. In the early twentieth century, ferries carried visitors across Burrard Inlet to West Vancouver's beaches, and Ambleside grew into one of the North Shore's most popular waterfront gathering places.
Things to See and Do
Relax on the Beach
Ambleside's sandy beach faces south across Burrard Inlet, offering views of the Lions Gate Bridge, Stanley Park, and, on clear days, the downtown skyline peeking out beyond the trees. Driftwood logs provide plenty of seating, and the beach is sheltered enough to be popular with families. Lifeguards supervise the swimming area during the summer season.
Watch the Ships Go By
Ambleside is one of the best places in the region to watch ships pass through the First Narrows, the narrow channel beneath the Lions Gate Bridge. Cruise ships, container vessels, tugboats, and sailboats all pass close to shore, and seeing a massive freighter slide under the bridge never gets old.
Walk the Centennial Seawalk
The Centennial Seawalk runs west from Ambleside along the waterfront to Dundarave, a flat and scenic walk of roughly two kilometres. Along the way you'll pass rocky coves, public art, and benches facing the water. End your walk at Dundarave Pier, then grab a coffee or ice cream in Dundarave Village before heading back. Note that the seawalk is for walkers only, so leave your bike behind.
Off-Leash Dog Area
Ambleside Park has a large, popular off-leash dog area at its eastern end, near the mouth of the Capilano River, with open space and water access. It's a favourite meeting spot for North Shore dog owners. Check posted signage for current boundaries and rules, and note that dogs aren't permitted on the main swimming beach.
Explore Ambleside Park
Behind the beach, Ambleside Park offers playgrounds, sports fields, a pitch and putt golf course, a skate park, picnic areas, and a peaceful pond that's home to ducks and other wildlife. There's enough here to fill an entire day.
Watch the Salmon Run
In late summer and fall, salmon return to the Capilano River, which meets the ocean right beside Ambleside Park. Anglers line the riverbanks, and the river mouth is a good spot to watch for seals and seabirds feeding.
Harmony Arts Festival
Every summer, Ambleside's waterfront comes alive with the Harmony Arts Festival, a free, multi-day celebration featuring live music, artisan markets, outdoor dining, and art exhibits along the seaside. It's one of the North Shore's biggest summer events. Check the festival's website for this year's dates and program.
