The Afghan Horsemen: Vancouver's Original Afghan Restaurant
The Afghan Horsemen opened in 1974 and bills itself as the first Afghan restaurant in Canada. It is also believed to be one of the oldest Afghan restaurants in North America. It now sits at 202–1833 Anderson Street, near Granville Island.
The family-managed restaurant celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. Here's what to order.
About The Afghan Horsemen Restaurant
It began as a small coffee-and-sandwich shop on Broadway at Cypress, drawing Kitsilano hippies with its vegetarian options, and later moved and expanded before settling in its current home.
The room is decorated with paintings and tapestries from Afghanistan, and diners can choose regular tables or traditional floor seating on cushions. It seats about 110, with a patio for more.
