02 The story
Granville Island, South Granville and the slopes above False Creek
Fairview rises from the south shore of False Creek up to 16th Avenue, between Burrard and Cambie Streets. It packs a lot into a small area: Granville Island on the water, the galleries and shops of South Granville, the medical district around Vancouver General Hospital, and some of the city’s most convenient apartment living.
Granville Island
Under the Granville Street Bridge, Granville Island turned former industrial buildings into one of Vancouver’s best-loved destinations. The Public Market is the centrepiece, with fresh produce, bakeries and local food stalls, surrounded by artisan studios, theatres, a brewery and waterfront patios. Small ferries connect it to downtown, Yaletown and Kitsilano.
South Granville
Granville Street between 5th and 16th Avenues is known as South Granville, a polished strip of art galleries, home décor stores, fashion boutiques and restaurants. The historic Stanley Theatre, now home to the Arts Club, anchors the street.
False Creek South
Along the water, False Creek South is a calm residential area of townhouses, co-ops and parks, linked by the Seawall. It is a popular route for walkers and cyclists heading to Granville Island or Olympic Village.
Getting around
Broadway–City Hall Station on the Canada Line sits on Fairview’s eastern edge, and frequent buses run along Broadway and Granville Street. Downtown is just across the bridges.
