Sumibiyaki Arashi: Michelin-Starred Yakitori Omakase in Mount Pleasant
Sumibiyaki Arashi is a 14-seat counter on East Broadway where chef Pete Ho grills a multi-course omakase over binchotan charcoal. It won a Michelin star in 2025, when inspectors said Ho had brought a new gold standard of yakitori to Vancouver. It is also among the city's hardest tables to book.
Here's what to know before you go.
About Sumibiyaki Arashi
Sumibiyaki means charcoal-fire grilling. Unlike a traditional yakitori shop, Ho does not limit himself to chicken. He often opens the meal with seafood as a nod to his roots.
The name is personal: Arashi is the last character of the chef's name. OpenTable notes that he brings his Taiwanese heritage to the Japanese grilling tradition.
The Menu
How It Works
There is one omakase menu, roughly 16 courses, built around skewers grilled in front of you. Ho grills with his back to the room because of city rules about grill placement.
What to Order
- Chicken skewers: different cuts, from thigh to heart and the oyster.
- Seafood starters: an opening nod to the chef's roots.
- Seasonal grilled vegetables: between skewer courses.
- Sake and Japanese whisky: to pair with the grill.
Dietary Needs
Omakase menus are seafood-heavy and set by the chef. Share allergies and restrictions when you book, as some cannot be accommodated.
