02 The story
Breweries, murals and Main Street
Mount Pleasant is one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods and one of its most creative. It climbs from False Creek up the slopes around Main Street and Broadway, mixing heritage houses, former industrial buildings and new apartments.
Brewery Creek
In the late 1800s, a creek running through the area powered some of the city’s first breweries, and the name Brewery Creek stuck. Today the tradition lives on: Mount Pleasant has one of the densest clusters of craft breweries and tasting rooms in the city, many in converted warehouses east of Main Street.
Main Street
Main Street is the neighbourhood’s spine, lined with vintage and independent clothing shops, record stores, cafés, bakeries and some of Vancouver’s most talked-about restaurants. The area around Main and Broadway is busy day and night.
Murals and art
Mount Pleasant is the birthplace of the Vancouver Mural Festival, and dozens of large murals cover walls and laneways throughout the neighbourhood, making it a great place for a self-guided art walk.
Getting around
Main Street–Science World Station is at the north end, Olympic Village and the Seawall are close by, and frequent buses run along Main Street and Broadway. Downtown is about 10 minutes away.
