Bamboo Grove: Richmond's Oldest Chinese Restaurant and a Master of Wok Hei
Bamboo Grove Restaurant on No. 3 Road opened in 1963, making it the oldest Chinese restaurant in Richmond. What began as a small dining room and coffee shop has become one of the most respected Cantonese kitchens in Metro Vancouver, ranked No. 8 on the Chinese Restaurant Awards' 2025 Elite 30 Canada list and featured by Canada's 100 Best.
Here's what makes Bamboo Grove special and what to order.
About Bamboo Grove
Executive chef Ming Yeung joined Bamboo Grove in 1995, bringing techniques learned in Guangzhou's Pearl River Delta. He is revered for wok hei, the smoky 'breath of the wok' that comes from cooking over intense heat with perfect timing.
His dedication shows in small things: for his simple stir-fried local gai lan, he sorts through boxes of produce to pick the best pieces, so only a few plates are available each evening. The restaurant, opposite Richmond City Hall, has collected multiple Chinese Restaurant Awards since 2010.
